WEST FARGO — Last spring, Furniture for Less owner Darrell Hansen announced he and his long-time business partner, Barry Sundlie, were retiring from the business they operated for 25 years, though Hansen said Furniture for Less could continue if a buyer was found.
But, that was not to be, according to Hansen, who said Thursday, Sept. 7, that the furniture store, which remained open this past summer to sell out its inventory, would be closing for good sometime in November, when remaining inventory was expected to be gone.
While their warehouses have been emptied out, they still have “tons of furniture, including sofas, loveseats, sectionals and chairs,” according to a statement released by Hansen and Sundlie.
They added that prices are being reduced further on remaining items and they “are prepared to take all reasonable offers and even some unreasonable ones.”
Hansen and Sundlie said said they have appreciated the support of their customers over the past 25 years, “but we have no choice but to close the store forever.”
Hansen told The Forum in May
that the longevity of his business was based on a basic philosophy of offering items that are unique, affordable and in stock.
That approach was particularly important during the pandemic, he said, when Furniture for Less tended to have inventory at a time when other stores found it hard to find merchandise to sell.
At the time he announced his retirement last spring, Hansen said Furniture for Less was busier than it had ever been.
Hansen said if someone had chosen to buy the business, its 25 or so employees would provide a ready and talented workforce at a time many businesses are finding it a challenge to find employees.
Hansen and Sundlie were employees themselves and working at the Arvid Benson furniture store in Moorhead when they decided to open a used furniture store in Moorhead in 1998.
They gradually added new furniture to the mix and after about a year they moved to a north Fargo strip mall, expanding their business footprint whenever other tenants in the mall moved out.
About 20 years ago, they purchased the former home of the SuperValu store in West Fargo after the city offered tax incentives to set up shop there.
Furniture for Less opened a store in the Moorhead Center Mall in 2010, but in 2020 it was announced that store would close due to workforce issues.
